The design source is the uniform of the "Pearly Kings and Queens," a British charity organization said to have originated when a road sweeper adorned his clothes with mother-of-pearl buttons he found, and then fundraised for children in orphanages and hospitals.
Each pattern is made using individual mother-of-pearl buttons.
